What Harlie’s Summer Plans are or not

Please?

Please?

*reposted from Sweet N Sexy Divas*

I’m so boring right now.  Between baseball games/practice, getting my 3rd grader to not have an anxiety attack over a state mandated test and life in general…yes, I’m boring.

I used to not be boring.  My 20’s were wild as hell.  A sometime marvel at how I manage to survive them at times.  At 47, I look back now and realize that my 20’s were a romance book.  But without the HEA…just a HFN.  Some people have asked me to write a book about it but I promised my brother that I wouldn’t until after our parents are buried.  They don’t need to know just how wild I was.  I was considered the good kid.  Never got in trouble, went to church, taught Sunday School, never missed a family event.  Underneath all that, yep, I was wild.

The stories I could tell about hanging out with the regional rock bands of the 90’s in the Dallas music scene.  Yes, ladies and gents…it would make your toes curl.  Plus, just not at this time.  Yes, hanging out with Zak Wyde from Ozzy’s band, watching my friends from Drowning Pool finally make it and then the lead singer and friend of mine dying of a weak heart.  The stories I could tell you about Pantera.  Yep, lots of stories.  Great guys but I couldn’t hang.  LOL!

Why am I telling you this right now?  Well a couple of reasons.  The biggest is that I’m writing again.  I know, shocker.  I’m taking the summer off from reviewing (still blogging and promoting) to finish some stuff that I’ve started.  This is what I have to finish:

1.  An anthology call for a publisher.  Its a Bad Boy story at least 5k.  So far, I’ve written 2k and my hero/heroine haven’t had sex yet.  Word count limit is 12k.  Woot!  Oh and the hero might be a “bad boy” but the heroine is the one that takes the lead in the bedroom.

2.  Finish the outline to a YA/NA crossover series.  I’ve outlined book #1 (YA/high school).  Book #2 is the college based book (mature YA) and then the NA after college story.  Need to finish the last one and polish the second one.  Hint:  these books are semi-autobiographical.  At least the first one is and the characters are based on real people that I grew up with.  *sigh*  Nothing worked out, so this is my way of making it work out.  LOL!  But I will tell you, the hero and heroine stay the same.  Each book will be able to stand alone.

3.  Finish a short romantic suspense w/paranormal elements.  I’ve waited too long to NOT finish it.  Think Andrew Dice Clay (don’t judge) as the hero as an angel.  Yes, as an angel.  But he doesn’t smoke (much) or treat women like dirt.  ;)  But he does drive a 1985 Black Trans Am with t-tops.

4.  If I have time, write some on the small town contemporary that has some people interested.  This one is a tough one for me.  It deals with my uncle’s death and the fallout but with different occupations.  I’ve already cried during one scene.

So there you have it.  What I planned for the summer in terms of writing.  Yes, reviewing has to take a backseat.  I can’t be put under that much calendar restraint right now.  I don’t have an assistant anymore, just me so it was a decision that I had to make.

Meanwhile back in Lindale…Only 4 more weeks of regular baseball and then the month of June is All Star baseball.  Yes, baseball takes over from February until the end of June.

Writing Process Blog Hop

Excited Student With A Composition Book
Stormie Kent tagged me on this meme.  I haven’t really thought about these questions so it was a blast to answer.  Thanks Stormie!

Stormie’s Link

1. What am I working on?
Currently I have three things.  A YA/NA that could turn into a 3 book series about one particular couple has they go from high school, college to adulthood.  It is a sweet/sensual book series that anyone could read.  My heroine is snarky and a blogger.
A romantic suspense with paranormal elements.  Hero is based on Andrew Dice Clay (don’t judge) with the 80’s attitude.  And yes, he drives a Trans Am with t-tops.  Woot!
My last one is a bad boy short for an anthology.  Needs to be erotic in tone and I’m loving my characters.  Sexy can not describe this one.

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?
Honestly, I don’t know.  I don’t compare my work to other authors.  Every author has their process when it comes to writing.
3. Why do I write what I do?
My one and only book is a 3 flame short.  Writing the sex scene was hard for me.  It didn’t help that SpongeBob was on in the background while I wrote it.  LOL!  My YA/NA is based on my teenage years and what I envisioned for myself all those years ago.
The RS story is for my love of angels in a story.  Plus, when I started doing the characterization for my hero Tony…the Dice Man kept coming up.  ;)
The bad boy short…well, let’s just say I was challenged by another writer for this one.
4. How does my writing process work?
I write when I can.  I’m a bad writer when it comes to scheduling my time.  I’m a stay at home mom so you would think that I would write all the time and be a best-selling author.  Well, I’m married, we have a very active third grade boy whose into scouts, basketball and baseball.  Plus, I have my review site that is very active.
When I came up with the ideas for my current WIP’s, I always write my character descriptions first.  Then the settings, GMC, cars they drive, etc.  After that, I’m a totally pantser.  I sit down and write.  I don’t self edit either.  I might write a couple of hundred words or I might write just a sentence.
My best friend, who is an author, challenges me every day to write something.  Anything and its working.  I don’t use word counts or page counts to mark my progress.  I don’t like being put under the microscope like that.  Plus, to me it’s just bragging and I don’t like bragging.  Every author writes differently and at their own pace.  Why should I measure myself against other people?  It used to depress me but not anymore.
For me it’s not a race to see if I can write a book in a month, get it published and write the next one.  I have a life outside of the writing/blogging world and I will not apologize for it.  I love my life, even when its crazy and sometimes writing takes a back seat.  Do I wish that I could write every day?  You bet but I don’t beat myself up anymore because I don’t.  Too much stress and hey, when you have kids…that’s enough stress for me.

Announcement with Good News

Coach Taylor!

Coach Taylor is smiling at me and he should be.  My pitch was AWESOME and Samhain has asked for the full.  *thud*  I know what you are thinking.  Is it done?  Most of it is including the synopsis.  I know, right?  But of course, now I need to finish it and get it out to my CP and a beta reader or two.  There is no time limit but I need this done and sent.   I’m also entering the Blaze writing contest and that needs to be polished, too.

Anyway, here is a very unedited excerpt from the story that I was asked for.  :)

Waiting on Sunday Excerpt:

Please forgive NOT EDITED

“Forrest, I’m sorry,” said Donna.  “I’ll help you clean it up.”

“No worries.  What are you doing here?”

Walking past Forrest, Donna walked into the kitchen and looked around for a mop, towel or anything to clean up the mess.  Not finding what she needed, she turned around and ran into a wall of hard man and literally bounced back on her heels.  He couldn’t take his eyes off of her.  Donna definitely grew into a woman.  She still had her auburn hair but it was cut short and flirty.  Big hazel eyes still mesmerized him and she was has headstrong as she was growing up.  Without a second to think, he grabbed her left wrist and pulled her back to his chest.  Her body molded into his and for a brief second, he lost all sensibility and rational.  What he wouldn’t give to touch her all over and feel the curves that had transformed her from girl to woman.

“What are you doing here?” Forrest asked.

“Well, hello to you too Forrest and an ‘I’m so sorry about your Uncle Jack’ would have been nice.  Not the surly snarl I just got.  You can let me go now.”

“Again…why are you here?”

“I thought I would come help you this morning.”

“Seriously, you, help me?  This isn’t City Slickers, sweetheart.”

“Too bad, Forrest.  I need to do this and to see his patients.  If not with you, then I’ll go on my own.  So what will it be?  Alone or with me?”

Damn, she looked good and she still gave as good as she got.  Grudgingly, he let go of her wrist.  He mourned the loss.

“Fine but I’m driving.”

***

After cleaning up the spilled coffee and broken coffee cup, they headed to Forrest’s truck.

My, my did Donna fill out a pair of jeans.  Watching her walk out the house and towards his truck, all he could think about was her butt in those jeans.  Donna was curvy, but had the tiniest waist.  Those jeans of hers cupped her backside like kid gloves and slung low on her hips.  Forrest loved a woman in a well-worn pair of jeans, and Donna’s were faded at the knees, and was that a rip on one of the back pockets?  Was she wearing cowboy boots on her feet?  Donna turned around and leaned against the truck door, his mouth went dry.  Was that a bellybutton ring dangling from her navel?  Damn, Donna was not the same person that left fifteen years ago.  She intrigued him more and more.

“Hey, we’re burning daylight.  Hurry it up.”

“Why are you so hell-bent on doing this?”

“Because I need the closure, Forrest.  Can we just go now?”

“Why the rush?”

“Because when we are done, I have to go to the funeral home with my cousins.”

Oh yeah…I fainted!  LOL!

Good Enough for Him (working title) Excerpt PG-13:

Please forgive NOT EDITED

With a gleam in his eye, he took her hand and led her to his bedroom.  Once they reached the bedroom, Noah didn’t turn on a light, the small light from the bathroom was enough.  He turned around and looked at Kate and saw the self-doubt hanging there in the air.  He knew that she was self-conscience about her body and how she looked but to him, she was the most beautiful woman he has ever seen.  She had filled out in all the right places and could now finally appreciate it as a man, not a boy.

He would take his time with her, no matter the effect it had on him and his body.  She deserved to be worshipped and he planned on worshipping it all night long.  Kate looked at Noah and all of her self doubts came to surface.  As much as she wanted him, she was too wrapped up in her body image and what he would think about it.  One touch was all it took for her doubting to go away.  He slowly untucked her blouse and lifted it above her head and throws it on the chair by the window.  The task done, Noah reached out and with the lightest touch, slowly trailed his fingers from her neck to her waist.  Going back up over her stomach and then over her breast and stopped at the top of her bra.  He then outlined her bra with his fingertips and found her nipples.  He slowly, very slowly caressed them ever so lightly until they budded.

Noah could feel Kate fighting the sensation and failing.  He also heard the soft gasp and then moan coming from her throat and saw her open her eyes with the deepest desire he had ever seen in a woman.  He trailed his fingers from the bottom of her bra to her waist and slowly turned her around and unhooked her bra and let the straps fall off her shoulders and let it fall to the ground.  He turned her around and began the slowly torture again.  Kate arched back from the sensation and realized that his mouth needed to be there instead.  She took his head and brought it to her breasts and watched him smile.  With a flick of his tongue, she nearly came undone.  Noah was in no hurry with her and told her so.  He reached around her and unzipped her skirt and let that fall to her feet.  He helped her step out of it and her shoes.

What he didn’t realize was that Kate was wearing thigh high hose and skimpy bikini panties.  Again, Noah thought, why did she have any doubt about her body?  She was beautiful, curvy and a woman.  Noah traced his fingertips again down from her stomach to the top of panties and listened as Kate hitched her breath and let out a soft moan, almost a plea.  That sound was nearly his undoing.  He traced the outline of her panties and reached around and traced her butt.

Lord, what a butt it was, round and curvy.  Supple and soft, like a baby’s bottom.  Kate could feel the heat building in her and realized that Noah was still dressed.  Kate looked at Noah and started kissing him and at the same time untucked his shirt and pulled it over his head and threw it over to the chair with her blouse.  With the lightest touch, she began kissing him from the jaw and down his chest to his stomach.  Noah felt himself hitch and gasp for air with Kate’s kisses.  No one had ever done that to him and nearly made him come.  He realized that this was important to Kate and just let the sensations come to him.  She found his belt and unbuckled it.  Noah did her the favor and took his shoes off and toed his socks off.  As Kate slowly took his pants off, she bent to her knees and left feather soft kisses on his waist and worked her way down.

Did you like it?  Hate it?  What’s the contest story and NO its not for a RWA sponsored contest.  :)  Come on Catherine!  You are sooooo close!  :)  I’m rooting for you!

Good Enough for Him (working title) Excerpt:

Please forgive NOT EDITED

Finishing up watering her garden and drinking the last of her beer, Kate went inside to wash up.  Still staring at her on the bar was the dreaded invitation.  She opened it up and began to read:

Welcome Back Cougar Class of ‘98

Ready to step back in time?

Where were you 15 years ago?  Come back to the reunion and find out.

Date:     Saturday, September 24, 2013

Kate didn’t get any further on the invitation.  She froze and realized that it was only a month away.  What was she going to do?  As if Fate already had plans for her, the phone was ringing.

“Hello?”

“Kate, are you going?  You know he’s going to be there.  What are you wearing?  Are you bringing anyone?  Of course not because he’s going to be there.”

“Whoa!  Slow down Beth.  Take a deep breath and stop talking for once.”

Kate knew this conversation was going to happen but she wished it were later, not sooner.  What was she going to say to her best friend since 7th grade?  You would think that as a grown woman she’d be able to handle going back to her reunion but for some reason, this reunion was hard.  She was still single with no man in sight.  Sigh…back to Beth and her ramblings.

“Kate?  Kate, are you there?”

“Yes and before you start again; yes, I’m going and no, I don’t care that Noah is going to be there.  By the way, he should since he was class president.”

“Liar.”

“I’m not a liar.  Noah was a teenage crush, nothing more.”

“I still say that you are a liar.  Come on Kate fess up.  You’re still in love with him and always will be.”

“Whatever.  Can we please drop the subject?  I’ve had a really crappy day and I was just about to go to bed and read.”

“Okay, I’ll drop it for now but I still think you’re lying,” laughed Beth.

“Bye, Beth.”

“Later, Kate.”

Damn, I hated when she was right about Noah.  Beth and Noah have been friends since the cradle and I met both of them in the 7th grade.  Beth and I became best friends within five minutes of meeting each other and I fell in love with Noah the second day of school.  While the years dwindled by and I dated a few boys and he dated a few girls, my heart always belonged to Noah.

***

The next morning Kate was sipping her coffee and checking her emails, when an IM came in from Alex.  Good Lord!  Don’t people ever sleep anymore?  Clicking on it, she smiled.   Alec was a good friend.  One of the few friends that she kept up with after high school, kinda of hard not to, since their brothers were best friends.

@Baseball25 “Morning sunshine.  Going to the reunion?”

@Hockey25  “Don’t you sleep?”

@Baseball25  “LOL!  Well, are you?”

@Hockey25  “Not sure.  Why go thru the torture again?”

@Baseball25  “Come on.  People grow up.  It will be fun.”

@Hockey25  “Doubtful.”

@Baseball25  “Free beer and I know how you like free beer.”

@Hockey25  “Tempting but don’t know yet.”

@Baseball25  “Please?  I’m begging.”

@Hockey25  “I’ll think about it.  Must go.  Some people work for a living.”

@Baseball25  “Not funny.  Talk to you later, sunshine.”

Alex always knew how to make her laugh.  Even if it was at 5:30 in the morning.  Ugh!  Reunion this, reunion that.  I’m tired of hearing about it already and it’s still a month away.   Well, time to get ready for work.  Shutting down her laptop, Kate went to the kitchen and poured a second cup of coffee and headed towards the bathroom.

***

Across town, Noah had just come in from his morning run.  Picking up the invitation again, it singed his fingers.  As class president he had to go and he really wanted to go but what if she doesn’t show?  He planned this reunion down to the finest detail with her in mind.  Football game on Friday, picnic at the old hangout and dance at the same hotel that prom was held so long ago.  Damn!  How was he going to find out if she was even thinking about it or even got the invitation?  Wait, I know.  Beth…she knew everything and still kept in touch with her.  At least, he hoped she did.  Noah still kept in touch with Beth through email and IM.  Looking at the kitchen clock he realized that he was going to be late for work.  He would IM Beth later.  Thinking about Kate would prove harder to worry about later.

Did you like it?  Hate it?  What’s the contest story and NO its not for a RWA sponsored contest.  :)

Please forgive NOT EDITED

Prologue-Waiting on Friday Night

Jack Moore finally decided that enough was enough.  His old body just couldn’t take it anymore.  Cancer had finally taken a toll on him and God decided that it was time.  He knew in his mind that it was time, too.  He would see his parents and his beloved wife, Linda after ten long years.

Jack’s veterinarian practice was successful and he knew that Kevin McCloud would take care of his patients.  Inviting Kevin to intern with him had been the best decision he made, and he knew that Kevin would do well for himself and deliver the best care to the county.  Kevin was a fine veterinarian and an even better surgical vet than Jack.  Kevin was young and enthusiastic about animals and it helped that he was up on the new surgical procedures.  Kevin would also continue doing rounds to the outlaying ranches and farms that couldn’t get into town for their routine veterinarian care.  Now what about Forrest?

Forrest Danielson grew up to be a fine young man.  Steadfast, loyal and willing to lend a hand to anyone that needed it.  Forrest was also his friend.  When Jack got sick, Forrest continued to go on rounds with Kevin and lend a hand.  Whatever the farmer or rancher needed, Forrest personally would deliver it that day.  He was the unofficial third in the practice.  With his co-ownership of the feed store with his father, Jack knew Forrest would be okay.  What worried Jack was Forrest’s personal life.  Jack had seen Forrest through his marriage, his divorce, and then discovered Forrest wanted a woman that would love him and the town in which he grew up.

Jack knew just the woman for him but Forrest had been too blind to see that his niece, Donna, was that woman.  Donna had been in love with Forrest since they were teenagers.  When Jack got sick, he decided to make Donna his estate beneficiary instead of his three grown children.  He knew it was for the best for everyone involved.  Playing matchmaker from the grave wasn’t going to be easy but Jack knew that Forrest and Donna would find their way towards each other.

Like it?  I hope so because this is what I’m pitching in less than two weeks.  If I sell Forrest’s and Donna’s story, Kevin’s story is next…

New Years Goals and Ponderings…

Six Sentence Sunday

Wow, do I wish it were Spring.  Its cold and rainy in my part of Texas.  I would like to see the sun soon.  I hope that everyone had a great holiday season.  Now, the cold hard truth of the new year is upon us.  I’ve taken some stock in my life and here’s what I’ve come up with, so bear with me.

1.  I have to finish my current WIP in the next few weeks.  I’m pitching it to a well known publisher mid-month and I need to be prepared.

2.  Re-work my synopsis on my romantic suspense for submission.  This is going to be a tough sell for me.  Its got a paranormal element that runs through it and its sweet.

3.  My release came went with a wimper and a gasp.  I got sick over the holidays and was out of town for it.  Plus, it released two days early.  To everyone that liked, tagged and bought it, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  It means a lot to me.

4.  Write a couple of more blog posts for my two upcoming blog tours.

5.  Spend more time on Facebook and Twitter as a writer and not my “real” self.

6.  Try to find some help on the review blog.  I need it badly right now.

7.  Realize that what I really want to be when I grow up is to be a writer.  Say it to myself every morning when I wake up.

8.  Also, realize that I’m not going to please everyone and that I’m sure I’ve pissed some people off and that’s okay.  I can’t make everyone happy and lately, more people have disappointed me than I have fingers and toes to count on.  That’s life and a harsh reality to learn from.

9.  To realize that I’m not one of the cool chicks and be okay with that.  No one is beating down my door asking me to join their group, co-write with them or hang out with them.  It hurts but I’ll get over it.  I got over it in high school so why should now be any different.

10.  Lastly, remember that I do matter and count in this world.  I don’t have to everyone’s approval for everything that I do.  Most people don’t but for some reason, *head slap*, I thought I did.  Wrong0…I, Harlie, make my own happiness.

Whew, that’s a bunch and I’m sure that I’ve hit some nerves, too.  But a few people have told me to live my life and be happy for me.  Its okay to be selfish.

To the people that are still around reading this, thank you.  I’ll be better in 2013 on the blog.  Trust me, Coach and Riggins are not happy with me right now.  Illness is NO excuse in their book.  Damn it!  I hate that a football coach and player has so much influence over me but hey, just look at them.  They can do whatever they want and I don’t mind them anyway.  Their punishment is…

Another Epic Fail for Harlie (as a writer)Coach Taylor!Don’t forget that I’m still running a release week contest.  A $15 GC is still up for grabs.  Good luck!

Oh…in the next few days, Tammi and the teachers will have their review of The Couple.  :)

Writing the Query Letter——UGH!

This is me at the moment. Ugh! Okay, I’m not blond but I do have green eyes.  :)  Trying to write a query letter. Okay, okay…why a query letter? Well, I have two stories that the synopsis done and one story has the first three chapters done. I’m looking to query submissions on both of them to two different publishers and a query letter is required. Shocked, you are? You really shouldn’t be. I’ve written on two different stories for the past months and both of them are as different as night and day. One is a sweet (heat level) Romantic Suspense and the other is a sensual contemporary set in a small town. Kim, Tony, Forrest and Donna are really screaming at me now and the time is right. I need to get their stories finished so that I can get them out there.

As a newbie writer, a query letter seemed a little old-fashioned to me but as I read more and more about the different publishers and there requirements, they are requiring not only the synopsis but the letter, too. Crap, where to start? Writing the synopsis was hard enough and now a letter, too? Well luckily I remembered and bookmarked a blog that a YA author has that is wonderful. Here is the link: Elana Johnson, Blog

She has even offering her book on how to write a query letter for free. I downloaded it and it has been fabulous. She even has worksheets for the learning impaired like me. I’m a visual person, so the worksheets have been great to work with and get my thoughts on the paper. It’s not pretty on the worksheets but at least now I can work with what I have.

She goes into great detail about the four parts of the first query letter:  The Hook, The Set Up, The Conflict and The Consequence.    I’m sure most of you know about the four parts of a query letter but this newbie did not have a clue.  The book that I sold, sold on a pitch so I skipped the synopsis and query letter part of the process.  I’ve spent the better part of today, Black Friday, working on this.  I’ve been flat on my back for most of the holiday so far…back went out Wednesday, so its been hard to work on the computer.  I’ve barely been able to sit at the computer but with the worksheets printed out, I’ve written up one query letter and working on the second one.  Don’t even want to read now.  Just want to write.

Wish me luck and if/when I hear back from my query letters, I will let you know the status.

Harlie

Special thanks to Mart Ramirez for leading me to Elana’s blog.  *Big Kiss*  Mart’s link is Martha Rameriz, Writer Martha has got links and more links than you can imagine for the newbie and established writer. You really should check it out.

WIP – The Next Big Thing Questions

When Stormie Kent emailed me and asked me to participate I said, sure why not.  Then I had to really think about which WIP to use.  Here are my answers for Angel in the House.  Enjoy!

Ten Interview Questions for the Next Big
Thing:

What is your working title of your book?  Angel in the House

Where did the idea come from for the book?  Not sure, really.  I’ve been working on this story off and on for about a year.  I wrote it with my friend Kim in mind.

What genre does your book fall under?  Romantic suspense with paranormal elements

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?  Don’t laugh and don’t judge…Andrew Dice Clay (when he was younger) for Tony and for Kim, I’m not sure but if I had to pick… Reece Witherspoon.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?  With the help of an angel with a past, a woman learns to live and love again.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?  Hoping to sub it to Love Inspired Suspense

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?  A year and I’m now in critique mode.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?  Marta Perry

Who or what inspired you to write this book?  My friend Kim.  It was a dare to see if I could write a paranormal and it just took off from there.  :)

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?  This story was intended to be a serial on the blog but as people started reading it, they wanted a book, not a serial.  Plus it was supposed to be spicy.  I was approached by a couple of authors to take the sex out (gasp) and write it with more of a romantic suspense with kisses and it just works.  Don’t ask me why but it just does.  Its a story about redemption, unconditional love and a second chance at life.
