Bella Key by Scarlet Chastain
Release Date: May 3rd
from Evernight Publishing
Maddie Jacobs must be crazy. At least that’s what her mother thinks. Professionally, she’s confident and secure; personally, she’s a hot mess. Not even a marriage proposal from a man who adores her can quell her search for something more.
In need of an escape, Maddie flees to Key West’s most southern island, Bella Key, to rest and recharge at Casa Bonita. She almost gives up on weekend retreat when the Bed & Breakfast is closed for repairs until Sunny Rojas, the inn owner, extends an offer of friendship, sweet tea and a room. Still reeling from a breakup with her longtime partner, Sunny is thankful for the diversion from her own broken heart.
The arrival of a fierce storm forces the women’s emotional journey to a head and leads them into each other’s arms. But can Maddie throw her hangups to the wind and go with her heart? The magic of Bella Key teaches her that passion cannot be placed neatly into boxes labeled right and wrong, because love knows no boundaries.
Sunny walked toward the slim form sitting on a bench facing the water. The reds and oranges of the sunset played off Maddie’s golden hair. Sunny’s fingers itched to smooth a wisp of hair blowing in the early evening breeze. An overwhelming feeling of desire to wrap her arms around the woman, guide her head to her shoulder and stroke her hair while she whispered ‘everything will work out’ ran through her head.
“It’s stunning, isn’t it?” She nodded at the horizon when Maddie looked up. “I never get tired of watching Key West sunsets. Each one is different. I come down here a lot to think, or when I have a decision to make. There’s something about the sunset that puts things into perspective.” Sunny stared at the glowing orange sun disappearing into the wide expanse of sea. “Here, I brought you some more of the sweet tea you liked earlier.”
Maddie took the glass from her, and the brush of her fingertips along the back of Sunny’s hand sent her nerve endings on overdrive. Sunny leaned on the back of the bench, supporting her weight with arms. “I spent much time down here dealing with the same situation. My guy’s name was Emilio.”
Maddie’s head cocked to the side. “Emilio? I thought you were—”
“A lesbian?” Sunny snorted. “I don’t really think of it as liking one sex versus another. I’m attracted to the person, you know, what’s inside. But, yes, since Emilio I’ve only been with women. Leaving him was hard. We met in college and he wanted to get married after graduation. Asked my parents and everything.” Sunny chuckled, remembering the disappointment reflected in her mother’s eyes when she told her they’d broken up.
Maddie turned and put her feet on the seat of the bench, drawing her knees to her chest. “What happened?”
“I’ll tell you what didn’t happen, chica. The world didn’t end. Emilio found someone else and is happily married with a couple of kids. My mother not only got over the fact that l broke up with Emilio, but she accepts the fact that my goals in life aren’t the same as hers. You see, those who really care about you just want to see you happy. What you need to figure out is what makes you happy.”

Okay, I can be completely stupid sometimes. I know, shocking but I was cruising Goodreads last night and look what I found:
Basically, I’m now #251 out of #512 in the Listopia of Best New Author Books. Okay, didn’t know this existed and Holy Cow!!! The reviews have been very good on Goodreads, too.
I won’t talk about my ranking over at Amazon…its sad, very sad but again, the reviews have been excellent. I still don’t know if the book has made a dime and won’t until next month.
Anyway, just thought I would share my good news.
He’s pretty, isn’t he?
Okay, that wasn’t the question, sorry but feel free to comment.
Here’s the question:
For readers: What draws you to read a book? Length? Cover? Blurb? Author name?
For authors: When you were a debut author, what got readers to your book?
The reason I’m asking these questions is because hardly anyone is reading my debut. I know, I know, its been out a month and it takes awhile for people to find it. I’ve already heard these from authors…you need a back list, don’t worry about your debut, concentrate on your next book, promo, promo, promo, did you have a mentor when you wrote the book (no I did not), have you joined a writer’s blog (tried but I’ve been rejected more times than I can count).
That’s all well and good and great advice but consider these facts that I have realized:
1. No one pays that much attention to me on FB or Twitter, so any and all promo that I have done is ignored.
2. I have/had ARC copies of my book and no one wanted them.
3. I realize that my book is only 20 pages, it won’t win the Pulitzer but I’m proud of it.
4. I know that most reviewers are backed up. It happens, trust me.
5. I know that the playing field is crowded out there with books, so I’m not sure how to stand out.
6. I don’t have a posse. Maybe I should get one…
You are probably thinking that I have sour grapes and in some respects I do. It hurts when you do something that most people wouldn’t dream of doing, you are proud of it and it seems that no one cares. It hurts that I have done everything right so far and nothing. Nada…zip…crickets chirping.
Well, I know that there are people who have read it and liked it. In fact I was told that I actually mislead them into thinking it was just hot and spicy and its more than that.
I have two blog tours that will start next month and I will post every day where I am for that day. Hopefully, people will find me on the tours and want to read the book. It’s all I can hope for now.
Have a great weekend y’all.
When I contacted by Mamie’s publicist at Simon and Schuster, I couldn’t breath. I mean, seriously? I’m a nobody in the reviewing world but some how I was contacted. Simon and Schuster is big. This is Mamie’s debut novel and I’ve already started reading it. Good lord…bring a hose, a toy or two and have your partner on standby. Harlie’s Books will be reviewing it on Monday, January 7th. *wipes brow*
An erotic debut novel featuring a young actress who makes a deal with a hotshot Hollywood producer: in exchange for stardom, she’ll do whatever he tells
her—including fulfilling his darkest desires.
When promising young actress Jessica Barry moves to Hollywood in search of stardom, she gets more than she bargained for. Jacob, a Hollywood producer who knows everyone, assures Jessica that he will help her rise to the top of the business, as long as she does “exactly what he tells her.” She soon discovers this involves following every one of his sexually sadistic rules—including obeying his second in command, Magali, a gorgeous Frenchwoman who toys with Jessica, sexually teasing and tormenting her.
In exchange for stardom, Jessica must seduce Hollywood superstar Thomas Mansell. Using the newfound powers taught to her by Magali, Jessica wins Thomas’s heart. But when Jessica actually falls in love with Thomas, Jacob cruelly reminds her that he owns her—body and mind. Erotic and sensual, this is the side of Hollywood that no one dares to talk about.
